Job Purpose: 

The Director of Community Impact oversees assigned areas of grantmaking, including the selection and recommendation processes, awarding, monitoring, and reporting of grants annually. Additionally, this position plays a critical role in the planning and delivery of programs at the Community Foundation. Additionally, as a leader on the Impact Team, this position is responsible for full engagement in the implementation of our impact model in which asset development, grantmaking, and nonprofit relations are integrated to maximize impact to the community.

The position plays a role in strengthening the Community Foundation’s presence throughout the region as an effective funder and community leader.  The person in this position must demonstrate professional and personal commitment to the Foundation’s values of collaboration, equity, leadership, and trust and must be able to work in a team environment to ensure organizational goals are attained.

Duties:

Impact Team Collaboration and Engagement:

  • Contribute to building and sustaining positive team culture that supports commitment to shared goals and core values, and that fosters development of individual leadership, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Participate with Impact Team colleagues to identify opportunities for strengthening and enriching stakeholders’ experience with the Foundation, including fundholders, donors, prospects, grantees, nonprofits, and volunteers.
  • Participate with Impact Team colleagues to identify opportunities for co-investment and donor/nonprofit collaboration.
  • Work in collaboration with other Impact Team colleagues and communications staff to tell stories of impact for the community, and for donor-specific reporting.
  • Work with Impact Team colleagues and communication staff to produce events, convenings and other opportunities for donor engagement and donor/grantee connection.
  • Leverage grantmaking expertise and work with other Impact Team colleagues to provide content for donor research requests.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the Impact Team annual budget.

Emphasis in Grantmaking:

  • Provide leadership and overall coordination of grantmaking activities within the Impact Team and engage colleagues in the grantmaking process.
  • Identify potential grantmaking opportunities and grantee partners in the community.
  • Facilitate funding cycles and process management for the grant program. This may include but is not limited to responding to grant cycle inquiries, ensuring due diligence on grant applications, facilitating application review and recommendation process with Distribution Committee, and coordinating of award notifications and processing, including the planning and facilitation of the grant ceremonies.
  • Maintain grant records and correspondence with grantees regarding their awards by monitoring compliance and ensuring completion of Terms of Grant and Grant Reports.
  • Work with the Vice President of Community Impact and Impact Team colleagues to develop strategies to increase grant making impacts and measure progress and gaps to adjust grant making strategies and systems.
  • Coordinate with Program Team to refine protocols for grant review, including developing, documenting, and maintaining internal systems for grantmaking.
  • Work with the Director of Marketing and Communications to update and maintain grant procedures and applications on the Foundation’s website and promote grant opportunities as well as stories of impact.
  • Assist in identifying prospective committee members for the Black Hawk Distribution Committee.
  • Provide general assistance and build trusted relationships with fund advisors and grant seekers through engagement in community meetings and events and visits with nonprofits.

Emphasis in Programs:

  • Provide leadership and overall coordination of CFNEIA programs, to be determined based on experience and alignment.
  • Develop and execute program budgets.

Strategy, Vision and Leadership

  • Work closely with the Impact Team in creating/managing the overall vision for the community impacts at the Foundation.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the Foundation’s strategic goals and objectives.
  • Provide leadership in support of the mission, vision and strategic priorities of the Foundation.

Other Duties:

  • Work with the Vice President of Community Impact to maintain National Standards as defined by the Council on Foundations, and any state standards that may be developed.
    • Attend meetings and serve on committees (internal and external) as requested by the President/CEO and/or Vice President of Community Impact.

Responsibility Level:

The Director of Community Impact reports directly to the Vice President of Community Impact. The Director is expected to be a strategic partner, specializing in grantmaking activities and processes while engaging as a key team leader on the Impact Team. The Director will work effectively and collaboratively with Board members, staff, fund holders, other foundations, and the community at large. Director may supervise 1-2 staff and/or interns.

Skills/Qualifications/Personal Characteristics:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • At least five years of experience in the nonprofit sector or relevant related professional experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (especially Outlook, Word, and Excel) required.
  • Willingness to travel required (valid driver’s license required).
  • Strong database skills and ability to efficiently manage and deploy data.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communications skills.
  • Work style characterized by self-motivation, initiative, and integrity.
  • Committed to confidentiality, effectiveness, and efficiency.
  • Ability to build inclusive, collaborative relationships with diverse stakeholders .
  • Excellent judgement and decision making while balancing competing priorities.
