Job Summary

The Chief Growth Officer (CGO) is responsible for leading the growth, visibility, and community impact of Cedar Valley Hospice. This role oversees strategic initiatives to increase patient census, enhance referral networks, manage marketing and branding, and support fundraising efforts. The CGO serves as a key member of the Executive Team, partnering with clinical leadership, marketing and development staff to ensure growth strategies align with the organization’s mission, values, and long-term strategic plan.

Key Responsibilities

Organizational Growth & Strategy

  • Oversee efforts toward the growth of the organization, focusing primarily on improving census and length of stay.
  • Develop a detailed enterprise growth plan by year and by quarter, ensuring goals are ambitious, measurable, compliant, and aligned with the strategic plan.
  • Partner closely with the Chief Clinical Officer to identify and solve barriers to admitting eligible patients.
  • Accountable for key performance indicators (KPIs), including referral/admission conversion rate, referral generation from priority accounts, and time to bedside (in conjunction with Chief Clinical Officer).
  • Partners closely with the Chief Executive Officer to advise on and contribute to the organization’s growth strategy- including strategic partnerships, affiliations, mergers and acquisitions- by evaluating opportunities for alignment with the mission, values and long-term sustainability of Cedar Valley Hospice. 

Sales & Community Liaison Oversight

  • Oversee community liaisons and sales liaison, ensuring productivity, accurate documentation, and adherence to quarterly sales plan goals and targets.
  • Provides strategic leadership to liaisons, ensuring accountability for KPI’s, and mentoring them to develop referral relationships and secure hospice-eligible referrals.
  • Empowers and trusts direct reports to manage their responsibilities independently while providing coaching to develop the skills necessary for consistently high-quality outcomes.
  • Develop and maintain leader-to-leader relationships with key referral sources and health systems to strengthen referral pipelines.

Marketing, Branding & Advertising

  • Develop and execute a strategic marketing plan and budget, tracking analytics for effectiveness and alignment with marketing goals.
  • Lead the development and maintenance of brand standards; oversee visual implementation across marketing materials, advertisements, public-facing properties, and the organization’s website.
  • Serve as the voice of the organization for public relations and community engagement, raising organizational visibility in the local community and media.

Fundraising & Advancement

  • Oversee the organization’s fundraising goals, empowering the Development Director to lead day-to-day initiatives.
  • Ensure CVH is accurately and positively represented in all external communications, press releases, and public-facing materials.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Participate actively in the Executive Team and Advancement Team, contributing to strategic decision-making and organizational priorities.
  • Attend and report at Board of Directors meetings as needed.
  • Participate in Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement (QAPI) initiatives as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Executive Officer


Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Public Relations or related field required.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum 7–10 years of senior leadership experience in growth, business development, marketing, or fundraising, preferably in healthcare or non-profit organizations.
  • Experience in hospice, home health, or palliative care strongly preferred.

  • Proven track record in organizational growth, business development, and marketing strategy.
  • Strong leadership, team management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage complex environments, and partner with executive leadership.
  • Excellent communication skills with staff, healthcare providers, donors, media, and the public.
  • Outstanding problem-solving skills and use of mature judgment.
  • Ability to handle critical situations and accompanying stress with professionalism and poise.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel; familiarity with CRM or fundraising software preferred.
  • Passion for mission-driven work and ability to represent the organization effectively in the community.
  • Current Iowa driver’s license, reliable vehicle, and car insurance.


Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

  • Work Environment: Primarily office-based with regular travel to clinical sites, community events, partner organizations, and networking or fundraising events. May occasionally be exposed to patient care areas or public venues.
  • Physical Demands: Must be able to sit, stand, and move around for extended periods. Frequent use of hands and fingers for typing, data entry, and document handling. Occasionally lift or carry items such as presentation materials, marketing supplies, or event equipment (up to 25 lbs).
  • Mobility & Travel: Ability to walk short and moderate distances at partner sites, events, or within office locations. Occasional travel by car or air may be required for meetings, conferences, or outreach initiatives.
  • Sensory Requirements: Normal visual and auditory abilities required for reading, reviewing reports, analyzing data, conducting presentations, and participating in meetings.
  • Working Hours & Schedule Flexibility: Full-time, exempt position. Standard office hours with flexibility for early mornings, evenings, or weekends to meet organizational needs, attend Board or committee meetings, fundraising events, or community engagements.
  • Stress Management & Environment: Must perform in a high-responsibility role that involves managing competing deadlines, KPIs, sensitive data, and multiple stakeholder relationships. Ability to maintain composure and professionalism under pressure is essential.
  • Public Engagement & Representation: Frequent engagement with staff, healthcare providers, donors, media, and the public, requiring professional presentation, effective communication, and adaptability to diverse settings.
