Assistant Professor of Instruction – Costume Design & Technology
The University of Northern Iowa’s Department of Theatre seeks applications for a two-year term Assistant Professor of Instruction in Costume Design and Technology position, starting in August 2026. After expiration of a contract term, positions may be renewed according to the provisions denoted in the Faculty Handbook, Subdivision 2.4b. Duties include teaching introductory and/or advanced costume technology each semester; teaching coursework for the Design and Production design sequence classes; designing costumes and/or hair and makeup for one or more main stage productions each semester; supervising/executing costume designs in collaboration with other design faculty, staff, and student designers each semester; supervising and mentoring students as required; and teaching in the department core as needed or as professional interest dictates.
TheatreUNI mounts two main stage productions per semester with a highly collaborative production team. The Department of Theatre is a NAST-Accredited program with four emphasis areas: B.A. in Performance, Design & Production, Theatre for Youth and Communities, or Comm-Theatre Teaching.
Required Qualifications: MFA degree or completion of degree by start of employment; professional experience in design for theatre and/or related fields; and teaching experience at the university or college level required. Teaching as a graduate assistant will be considered.
Preferred Qualifications: Skills in computer-aided costume rendering and pattern drafting and the ability to teach in these technologies; familiarity with industry best practice standards, makeup and wig design, costume construction; strong organizational skills; and experience with a variety of theatrical styles and genres preferred.
