About Us

Americans for Independent Living (AFIL) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit assisting local veterans in need. AFIL assists veterans experiencing homelessness, disabled and low-income veterans. AFIL has two veteran transitional homes in Waterloo which can house seven individuals. The two homes combined have assisted 18 veterans since 2017 with transitional housing. AFIL accepts item donations from the community to help with our Furniture for Veterans program. When a veteran experiencing homeless moves into housing then AFIL provides furniture, kitchen and self-care items, clothing, household goods, and food. Since 2017, AFIL has assisted 622 veterans including their spouses and dependents. During this time, AFIL has assisted these veterans and their families 1276 times. There is a clear need for AFIL's services in our community.
