Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity operates in Black Hawk, Butler, Bremer, and Buchanan counties, bringing people together to build and repair homes, communities and hope. We are dedicated to eliminating substandard housing through construction, rehabilitation, and preserving homes; improving the quality of life for local families through holistic neighborhood revitalization; advocating for fair housing policies; and providing access to resources to help families improve their shelter conditions. 

The Development Director for Iowa Heartland Habitat is responsible for developing strategies for the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors with special focus on gifts from individuals and churches to support Iowa Heartland Habitat’s annual fundraising, endowment, and related programs. An ability to empathize with donors and clearly communicate the organization’s mission is key. The Director of Development also oversees the contracted grant writer and overall grants management, the donor database administrator, and is involved in advocacy at the local, state and federal level in coordination with the executive director.

‍ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & CORE RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to: 

  • Lead, manage and hold accountable the development team
  • Oversee significant portfolio of donors and prospects including individuals, corporations, public and private funding organizations, and faith-based organizations
  • Help donors accomplish their philanthropic goals through a relationship with the organization
  • Participate in each step of the donor pipeline including: identification; qualification through research; cultivation; request for support; and prompt follow-up, stewardship, and recognition
  • Direct, face-to-face solicitations, and assisting the board and other staff with solicitation (e.g. provide portfolio development support, strategic counsel, and help with donor communications)
  • Develop unique strategies, along with materials, to renew and upgrade donor gifts
  • Collaborate with internal teams to enhance relationships, align efforts, set goals and create greater fundraising and outreach possibilities
  • Participate in departmental portfolio review process and be a partner in maintaining an organized system for stewardship by updating constituent records, as appropriate

  • Demonstrated experience and success in nonprofit fundraising preferred, with an ability to meet clear objectives
  • Ability to set goals strategically and oversee execution
  • Ability to organize and complete multiple tasks simultaneously with close attention to detail and prioritization to meet deadlines
  • High level of discretion and ethical approach to fundraising
  • Ability to make and keep friends, and establish and maintain sincere working relationships across various internal and external constituents
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with and among diverse populations and personalities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills that compel individuals to action
  • Proficiency in database management, Microsoft Office Suite, and other computer skills, as required
  • Knowledge and understanding of charitable and planned giving preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree and minimum of 5 years of demonstrated success in sales, fundraising or related field preferred
  • Valid driver’s license & insurance and/or reliable transportation required for out-of-office travel as required by the position
