SEXUAL ASSAULT NURSE EXAMINER JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title:  Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE)
Position:  Contracted with Riverview Center 

This is an On Call, contract position serving all hospitals in Black Hawk County.  SANE certification is not required to apply to this position as scholarships are available for the required training.  

Job Summary: 
The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner will provide timely, non-judgmental, compassionate care to victims of sexual assault. This may include a medical/forensic exam, prophylaxis for pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, photographic documentation, and referrals for appropriate medical and psychological follow-up. Additionally, a SANE may be called upon to testify for cases in which service was provided to their patient.
Responsibilities:
              Exhibit a willingness to serve persons who are affected by sexual assault.
               Uphold the belief that quality services are top priority.
               Maintain positive interactions with all disciplines of the sexual assault response team.
               Participate in SANE meetings as scheduled.
               Actively fulfill on-call obligations and be available as scheduled to respond.
               Must not be under the influence of drugs or alcohol while on call.
               Must be able to respond to facility within 60 minutes of being notified.
               Maintain clinical expertise as a SANE.
               Maintain registered nurse licensures or higher.
               Maintain open communication with SANE/SART Coordinators on regular basis.
               Adhere to all administrative, clinical, and employment policies and procedures.
               Perform and document sexual assault examination and forensic interview accurately.
               Perform complete medical and forensic evidence collection exam including:
                             assessment for trauma, detailed genital exam, forensic specimen collection and      
                             documentation including photography, comply with mandatory reporting guidelines.
             Document injuries accurately and use colposcope for photographic evidence.
             Maintain chain of custody and adhere to evidence protocols.
             Exercise professional standards that do not create conflict of interest with employment or            
             patient care, including patient and medical record confidentiality.
             Responsible for expert witness testimony when a subpoena is received.
Position Qualifications;
               Registered Nurse with current state licensure. (recommended minimum 2yrs experience)
               Successfully complete approved SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) training
               Complete initial and on-going precepting requirements as identified by program
               Submit and maintain required paperwork for compliance, i.e. background checks forms
               Ability to plan and organize work autonomously
               Demonstrate initiative, resourcefulness, and good judgement
               Ability to pass background check
