Deputy Director, Campus Security

WARTBURG COLLEGE POSITION DESCRIPTION Title of Position – Deputy Director, Campus Security Preparation Date: August 1, 2019 Function of Position: Works with and assists the Director of Campus Security & Safety (Director) planning, managing and maintaining security, and parking programs for the college. Consults and corroborates with other department managers and off campus authorities i.e., law enforcement, emergency management, and fire fighting and prevention authorities in an effort to create and maintain a safe living and learning environment for students, faculty, staff, visitors and other users of Wartburg College. Position is uniformed and Incumbent wears the insignia of captain. Principle Duties and Responsibilities: 1) Serves as Director in the absence of the Director (8%) 2) Performs principle duties of security officer plus the following supervisory and administrative duties. (25%) 3) Schedules and staffs all shifts and special events. (5%) 4) Conducts investigations of criminal and safety related complaints, to include Title IX complaints. (5%) 5) Authorized to contact parents or respond to their inquiries in accordance with department and college guidelines. (2%) 6) Contacts and coordinates with local law enforcement, emergency management and counterparts from other colleges and universities (5%) 7) Selects, trains and supervises student security assistants. (5%) 8) Follows up on open cases. (10%) 9) Serves as incident commander during emergency operations until replaced by law enforcement or other governmental agencies. Assists the Director with updating the emergency management plan. (8%) 10) Performs monthly checks of emergency phones and quarterly checks of duress alarms. (2%) 11) Trains and evaluates other security officers on parking regulations and enforcement procedures. (10%) 12) Develops and implements on-the-job training for officers. (5%) 13) Corroborates with director with updating plans, procedures, and manuals. (5%) 14) Performs other duties as assigned by the Director. (5%) Supervision: Incumbent receives general guidance from the Director, but works independently; relying on laws, regulations, and polices for guidance. Minimum Qualifications: Requires clear communication skills and desire to work with college-age students. Candidate must have an interest in residential programs and the development of community and its students. A positive and helpful attitude is required along with a willingness to work in a flexible environment, as a member of a hard-working team. Prefer experience working with diverse populations and in small college residence halls.
