Job Summary
Hawkeye Community College is taking the next step in becoming a Smart Automation Center leader in the area of Advanced Manufacturing Technology. The Business and Community Education department is looking for a full time Director of the Smart Automation Center to join their team.  The Business and Community Education department provides services to community, students and businesses looking for short-term training, continuing education, workforce training, apprenticeships, customized business training, and community resources.  The Smart Automation Center is a new campus located in Waterloo, Iowa and projected to be completed by January 2023.  It will be the first in the state to provide industry recognized stackable credentials, open lab training concept, competency and project-based education with hands-on skills with multiple cohorts at different levels.  State of the art equipment and programing from FANUC, Rockwell and Amatrol. The center programing is aligned with Smart Automation Certification Alliance (SACA) standards and will be the regional center. Students will be moved through their career pathway and businesses to their workforce goals and customized training being digitally ready for the future of advanced manufacturing.
 
As the Director, key responsibilities include the development, coordination, and potential instruction of training solutions facing the Advanced Manufacturing Sector and skill gaps/workforce opportunities.  Additionally, this position includes a combination of teaching and department, college and community leadership functions. Additionally, this position serves students from a broad range of cultural heritages, socioeconomic backgrounds, genders, abilities, and orientations.

Essential Job Functions
Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Manages the Smart Automation Center staff and center by providing leadership, mentorships and supervision.
  • Troubleshoots and addresses issues that arise in day to day running of Smart Automation Center and provides timely responses and solutions as required.
  • Builds and implements workforce training solutions for Advanced Manufacturing.
  • Provides continuous training improvement strategies to support programs, students and businesses through technical leadership and subject matter expertise.
  • Develops and revises appropriate program and course curriculum in response to discipline and workforce needs.
  • Facilitates student learning by developing student’s abilities, as well as, designs varied, innovative, and exciting learning environments while enabling and encouraging student success.
  • Participates in and implements departmental and center program reviews.
  • Manages center projects with internal and external stakeholders and provides professional consulting services to government or industry.
  • Gathers, systematizes, and analyses program and student data.
  • Serves on committees, task forces or advisory boards specifically industry related.
  • Collaborates with center industry partners such as Smart Automation Certification Alliance (SACA), FANUC, Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing (ARM), Amatrol etc.
  • Collaborates with members of the business community to improve programs, develop new programs, and to provide student access to learning opportunities, such as apprenticeships, internships, externships, or other work-based learning activities.
  • Maintains value in the discipline, including the use of advanced technology, professional growth and development, continuous innovation, and effective teaching strategies.
  • Initiates, executes and follows up on projects, as well as, sets specific objectives and measures achieved results.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, manufacturing, or other related field and three years of applicable experience or a combination of education and experience totaling 7 years.
  • Three years of program management and administration experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing education.
  • Established ability to lead, manage, coordinate and supervise staff, and a broad and diverse range of activities and people.
  • Demonstrated motivation to serve students from all backgrounds and educational experiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to work innovatively, individually as well as in teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide excellent customer service, maintain confidentiality and operational integrity.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence without authority to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with on-campus groups (including students, faculty, administrators and staff), as well as off-campus community and education partners.
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through inclusive behaviors and helping contribute to a culture of inclusivity, and a vibrant, diverse, equitable, and inclusive learning and working environment.
  • Demonstrated motivation to serve students from all backgrounds and educational experiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and apply new and current technical skills and ideas.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Mastery of one subject area/discipline in advanced manufacturing.
  • Three years teaching in postsecondary programming or education field.
  • Five years of experience in basic to advanced manufacturing theory.
  • Proficient in the design, implementation, and maintenance of a career technical education laboratory.
  • Experience in preparing students for industry-related certifications.
Employment Status

Working Conditions
Anticipated schedule is Monday through Friday with flexible hours that may include nights and weekends as well as potential travel.
 
Requires skills for succeeding in an office environment, using technology. Requires good hand-eye coordination including visual acuity to use a keyboard and read technical information; arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp. Work is performed in an office, classroom, and lab settings.  Sit, stand, bend, lift and move regularly during working hours. During the course of the day, interact with students, faculty, staff and public in person, by telephone and computer.
