The Chief of Staff will provide strategic leadership and serve as the communications coordinator for the University and Board of Regents, State of Iowa interactions. This will include coordinating with faculty, staff, and administrators to secure information in order to respond to requests for information from the Board of Regents. Additionally, they will oversee the coordination, preparation, and submission of docket items to ensure conformity, consistency, and accuracy.
On behalf of the university, the Chief of Staff works with the congressional delegation and their staffs, federal agency personnel, and university faculty, staff, and administration to secure federal funds and supportive legislation and policies.  The Chief of staff analyzes funding opportunities and sources and compiles data to build cases for requests as appropriate.  They also review pending legislation regarding federal higher education policies for university and student impact.
The University President and other senior leaders will rely on the Chief of Staff to serve as a senior advisor on high-level, sensitive, and other matters with a significant impact on university operations. The Chief of Staff will be responsible for managing high-priority projects and programs designed to support institutional goals and achieve the University's mission and strategic vision across multiple divisions. Additionally, they will develop and deliver complex presentation materials.
Required qualifications include a master's degree; at least three years of governmental relations, public policy, higher education policy and planning, or related experience; the ability to analyze, summarize, and communicate information effectively in both oral and written form; and effective problem-solving skills. Frequent work outside normal hours and on weekends will be necessary, as well as occasional travel. Preferred qualifications include a PhD, EdD, JD or other terminal degree and experience with federal relations in higher education.
