Instructor, Communication & Media and Director of Debate

The University of Northern Iowa's Department of Communication and Media in the College of Humanities, Arts & Sciences seeks applicants for a three-year term Instructor of Communication and Media and Director of Debate, starting August 2022. Teaching responsibilities include nine credit hours per semester, which typically includes Oral Communication (basic course) and other courses throughout the department. This position will also coach students who compete on the Debate team in the UNI Forensics Program and work with forensics graduate assistants assigned to that program; coordinate with the Director of Forensics and forensics graduate assistants to staff and operate the Debate Team; assist with hosting tournaments; conduct all travel planning for the Debate Team; develop annual budget for the Debate Program and report expenditures; travel with the Debate team to tournaments (normally 10-12 trips annually); recruit students and graduate assistants for the Debate team; and serve as a judge at tournaments. The Director of Debate will serve as the primary person responsible for coaching the Debate team and is expected to conduct weekly squad meetings and hold weekly group and individual coaching sessions.  This position will also participate in the department’s curricular program and contribute to an educationally sound and competitively successful forensics program.

The successful candidate must hold a M.A. in Communication Studies or related curriculum. Required qualifications include demonstrated effectiveness during at least two years of debate coaching, either as a graduate student or an active coach; demonstrated teaching effectiveness in a communication course; and an ability to travel.
