WARTBURG COLLEGE Title of Position: Advising Coordinator Responsible to the Academic Success Programs Director to coordinate campus-wide advising programs, including collaborative partnerships with departments across the college. This is a full-time, 12-month position. Principle Duties and Responsibilities: 1) Develop and implement campus-wide strategic initiatives for advising, including but not limited to advising processes, advising communication, and a comprehensive first-year advising model, that are consistent with institutional priorities to promote student success and retention. Collaborate regularly with the Academic Success Programs Director, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Registrar, academic departments, and other campus partners to refine and improve advising processes. (35%) 2) Coordinate the development and delivery of advising training for students and advisors. Represent advising initiatives on committees and collaborations related to academic success, retention, and the First-Year Experience throughout the college. Represent the Academic Resource Center periodically at events such as Visit Days, Scholarship Days, Summer Orientation Advising and Registration, etc. (20%) 3) Coordinate exploring major advising campus wide. Serve as primary advisor for exploring majors and secondary advisor for special cohorts of first-year students as needed. (20%) 4) Provide academic support to students identified by Academic Recovery processes or through formal and informal referrals by conducting self-assessments and creating academic success plans and incorporate intervention technology as appropriate. (15%) 5) Hire, train, and supervise student employees in support of advising and student success. (10%) 6) Other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Supervision: Employee works independently toward established objectives requiring the use of a wide range of procedures. Employee prioritizes own work and resolves unusual cases in consultation with supervisor. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree with at least five years of effective advising or other relevant professional experience required. Master’s degree preferred. Advising coordination/training experience preferred. Competencies: Communication - Ability to write, speak and present information effectively and persuasively in a wide variety of settings, including effectively designing and implementing trainings/workshops. Ability to clearly articulate and present ideas, concepts, and suggestions to others in individual or group settings. Professional Knowledge - Knowledge of the national conversation related to advising, including NACADA best practices and current trends; well versed in theories of learning and human development; knowledge of evidence based practice. Knowledge of retention practices. Strategic Direction - Ability to carry out objectives for advising consistent with institutional priorities that promote student success and retention, ensure access, and enhance the educational experiences of all students. Collaboration/Building Effective Relationships - Genuine interest in team goals and team building. Ability to reach across all factions of the college to build partnerships and engage in advising collaborations. Willingness to engage challenges and address them openly. Demonstrated experience in the supervision of student employees preferred. Creativity/Innovation - Ability to inspire and engage with new ideas and solutions. History of continued self learning through continuing education and professional development. Project/Case Management - Ability to develop and implement plans and timelines, and to assess or measure effectiveness. Case management experience. Advising and Student Support Technology – Ability to utilize and guide training on advising and student support systems (e.g. Jenzabar Advising).
