Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students

Wartburg College is searching for a Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students.  Reporting to the President and serving with the other Vice Presidents on the Cabinet, the senior student affairs officer bears responsibility for shaping the co-curricular experience for Wartburg students.  Committed to the college’s Mission, Vision, and Strategic Goals, the Vice President is a student-centered leader who coordinates, supervises, and evaluates programs that promote engagement in the life of the campus, develops life skills, and ensures a safe and inclusive learning environment.

Joining the college at an exciting time of great promise, the Vice President and Dean will work with new president, Dr. Rebecca Neiduski, as she leads implementation of the plan and works with her Vice Presidents to enhance enrollment, expand student success, augment the college’s financial foundation, and generate additional philanthropic investment through a comprehensive campaign that supports the strategic plan.
Together with the President and other colleagues, the Vice President and Dean will champion efforts to increase diversity, achieve equity, and enhance inclusion, while working to ensure that all students realize the opportunities and benefits of the college’s many experiential opportunities.
Striving to advance the college’s mission, realize its vision, and achieve its strategic goals, the Vice President and Dean’s principal duties and responsibilities include:

  • Leading the Student Life staff in developing programs, policies, and procedures that enhance relationships, promote equity, and promote student engagement and learning.
  • Supervising, managing, and leading staff representing the departments focused on student engagement, multicultural student affairs, international student affairs, residential life, dining services, career services and community engagement, counseling and health services, campus security and safety, student conduct, and the Wartburg Store.
  • Developing and implementing strategies to partner effectively with staff and faculty in Academic Affairs, to promote students’ academic progress, to enhance retention of students, and to foster an inclusive community of scholars.
  • Collaborating with the Vice Presidents and other members of the Cabinet to lead and guide enrollment management and maintenance of facilities, to foster relationships with student government leaders, parents, alumni, and other college stakeholders, and to represent the college internally and externally.
  • Representing student life interests and resources with the college’s Board of Regents.
  • Managing the code of student conduct and other policies and guidelines that reflect knowledge and a capacity to implement best practices in the student affairs profession.   
  • Serving or chairing college committees and advisory groups as assigned, including Retention, Student Life, Diversity & Inclusion, and advising Student Senate.
The college will be especially interested in candidates with:
  • Experience in managing crises and effecting successful conflict resolution.
  • Capacity to support faculty and staff in dealing with concerning student behaviors within and outside of the classroom.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Ability to develop, implement, and evaluate programs.
  • Experience with information systems and skill with managing the data.
  • Ability to promote and maintain a visible, energetic presence within the larger campus community.
The successful candidate will have an advanced degree in higher education administration (Master’s degree required, Doctorate degree preferred) and multiple years of progressive leadership experience in the student life field.
