Public Safety Officer (Firefighter/Police Officer)
The City of Cedar Falls is seeking qualified candidates to test, as applicable, for the position of Public Safety Officer. The FY25 annualized starting pay will be $66,553, but certified candidates will begin at Step 2 ($73,126) with the potential to start up to Step 5 ($86,311) based on the number of completed years of certified experience and if Firefighter I certified. Full-time benefits including tuition reimbursement apply. For consideration, all applicants must submit proof of two years post high school education consisting of 60 semester or 90-quarter credit hours from an accredited college or university with their application. In lieu of this, proof of Firefighter I & II certifications from the State of Iowa must be submitted and 5 years of public safety experience, including Firefighter or Police Officer experience. Candidates must meet the minimum hiring standards of the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy (see https://ilea.iowa.gov for physical agility and other requirements) and successfully complete civil service examination entry testing. Applicants need not retake the civil service examination if they are ILEA certified, have passed a civil service examination with another city, and have not had a break of law enforcement service of more than 180 days. Candidates not required to test will be interviewed and informed if added to the list of eligible individuals to employ. Candidates must also possess, or have the ability to obtain and maintain, a valid Iowa driver’s license with good driving record; and successfully complete a post-offer, pre-employment physical exam including drug screen, background investigation, and polygraph exam. Note: Applicants hired with the above college/university credits but without a State of Iowa Firefighter I certification will be required to obtain within 3 years from their employment date. Testing will be completed in Cedar Falls throughout the year as announced at the Public Safety Center located at 4600 South Main Street.
